Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) Complete Organ Works Vol. 5

Livre d’Orgue Messe de la Pentecôte

Excerpts from the booklet

…”What shape should an introductory text to such music take? Can we approach it through more detailed explanations of the finely crafted compositional structures? What would explanations explain about such music? Therefore, instead of further introductory remarks, a few selections from conversations with Olivier Messiaen:
R. I.: Maître, might it be that you've obscured the beauty of the music in these works through too much art?
O. M.: Dear friend, this question that you pose is a classical one. As you know, there are three stages to every creative act: the inspiration, the labour, and the product. In our century, the century of research and speed, emphasis has been placed on the second stage. Therefore one can't admire the genuine masterpieces highly enough, works which are the result of enormous labour and an immense technique, both in the service of inspiration. No, I don't think that I've exaggerated the compositional technique in these two works or deliberately expressed anything in complicated fashion. Everything had to be written because I experienced it so.” (Rudolf Innig)

Excerpts from the reviews

(Musica Sacra, 1997)

Innig belongs to the upper echelon of those who have recorded Messiaen complete….his playing is notable for its fluidness, its command of phrase… (Fanfare, 1997)

“The interpretations here are uniformly excellent, every bit the equal of the competition. Innig’s performance of these demanding works gets high marks for accuracy, tempo and registration.” (American Record Guide, 1997)
