Excerpts from the Booklet

In the foreword to his Partita „Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme“ Hugo Distler writes that he sees in this work a „path to a new kind of organ music which endeavours to again push forward from the limits of the merely contemporary into the realms of finality. And at another juncture he describes his compositional intentions as “renouncing both superficial monumentality in the sense of a great concentration of sound and oppressive individual differentiation”….
From today’s viewpoint Hugo Distler’s compositional innovations no longer appear by any means sensational, especially when one compares them with the organ works by Olivier Messiaen, who was also born in 1908, and who led the organ music through epoch – making new ideas into the musical avant-garde’s centre of interest. What is clearly perceptible in Distler’s music however – as in his short and troubled life – is the intense search for the “land of finality”, which endow his works and with a palpable credibility.
